What is a LAN?

Local Area Network (LAN) is a group of computers connected together for the same purpose. The most common application of LANs are to share files and printers between computers.

A Wireless Network will not be able to connect to the internet but it can still be use inside your house or office. If you do not currently have a Router, your wireless network card may need an extra device that can convert the wireless signal into an Ethernet signal for connecting via a cable to another computer. Also, you may need an additional device called an Access Point in order to use more than one computer with this method. This is not as secure as a wired network and also slower than one as well.

What are some of the benefits of wired networks over wireless ones?

· It's less expensive to run a wired network because you don't have to buy any equipment (apart from the LAN cable itself).

· You will not encounter problems with interference or range if you use cabled connections.

· Security is easier to maintain on wired networks because it's harder for other computers to connect to yours unless they know your passwords / security code.

· A wired network is generally faster than a wireless one, so if you're running a server or transferring large amounts of data, it's preferable to use cabled connections.

· Wired networks are more secure than wireless ones because they can only be accessed by people who have physical access to the cables.

If you want to set up a network at home or in your office, get yourself some cables, connectors and a hub. One of the popular brands for hubs is D-Link. They are available in any computer supermarket and electronics store, so you should have no problem finding them.

How to connect two laptops using lan [END OF ARTICLE]

1. Connect the network cables to the LAN ports on both of your computers.

2. If you want, you can also connect a printer by connecting it to one of your computers via the other computer's port.(it will not work if it is connected directly to the computer)

3. On most laptops and some desktop computers, there will be two Ethernet (LAN) ports on the back or side of your computer. Connect the network cable from each device to these Ethernet ports. (If your laptop does not have this connector, then look for another way to connect)

4. Now connect the computer that is running the internet browser to the main router. (usually the one with Internet and WLAN at the same time)

5. Connect the network cable from this internet computer to your router's WLAN port: if you are using Wireless connection, it should be automatically enabled on your router.

6. If you're using a wired connection, then connect one end of a LAN cable to your main router's WAN port and the other end to a LAN port on this other computer. (This is only required when connecting two computers without wireless capability)
